Update (9/30)!
The original rule (to the extent that it existed) was one disc, one slot, so I generally went with one disc from multi-disc compilations. But that rule annoyed me, so I have scrapped it in favor of No Compilations With More Than Two Discs And Keep Those To A Minimum. Here's what's different:
+ Congos - Heart of the Congos - 1977
+ Funkadelic - Maggot Brain - 1971
+ Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Monk Trio - 1952
+ Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners - 1957
+ Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes - 1968
+ Townes Van Zandt - High, Low, and In Between/The Late Great Townes Van Zandt - 1972
+ Hank Williams - 40 Greatest Hits - 1978
- Emerson String Quartet - Bartók: 6 String Quartets, Disc One (captures Quartets 1, 3, and 5) - 1988
- James Brown - Star Time Disc Three - 1991
- Flying Burrito Brothers - Hot Burritos! - The Flying Burrito Brothers Anthology 1969-1972 Disc One (captures the first two FBB albums) - 2000
- Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream - 1962
- Os Mutantes - Best Of Os Mutantes -- Everything Is Possible! - 1999
- Lee 'Scratch' Perry - Arkology Disc Two - 1997

Interesting list. I'm not sure how I got here from Fireplug's blog on "Carry on", but you have some interesting blogs and I like lists like this. If the author has intelligent things to say in other areas I'm always interested in finding new treasures among the lists. From you I found the 33-1/3 series and then these lists.
It's odd that no one has commented; usually lists evoke a storm. Personally I'm a little surprised that someone of your education doesn't have a few entries from the classical genre (oops, just noticed the Bartok quartets: amen!), well Cage scarely counts... There are many great modern classical works that deserve a listen. Try, for example, Kronos Quartet's "Pieces of Africa". Then there's always Bach's Cello Suites. Your jazz is good but better than "A Love Supreme" is his "Stellar Regions" or the live Village Vanguard recording of "My Favorite Things" and "Naima".
I wonder if you've found Eva Cassidy yet -- she deserves to be on everyone's list, RIP.
Best Wishes
